15 awesome uses for baking soda on I Heart Nap Time

Last week I made this cute little jar to store my Baking Soda in. I found these chalkboard labels at Staples and the jar at The Container Store.

    15 uses for baking soda

    1. CLEAN BRUSHES – Soak hair brushes and combs in a mixture of 1 teaspoon baking soda and a small amount of warm water. It will help remove natural build-up. Rinse and dry.
    2. CLEAN TOYS -Fill a sink up with warm water and add 1/8 cup of baking soda. Wash and rinse off  toys.
    3. BATH SOAK- Add 1/2 cup of Baking soda to your bath for a relaxing and refreshing soak.
    4. SUNBURN PAIN- Saturate a washcloth with a solution of 4 TB of Baking Soda in 1 quart of water. Apply to affected area.
    5. SEPTIC CARE- Add 1 cup of Baking Soda in your drains to keep your septic system flowing freely.
    6. LAUNDRY BOOSTER – Add 1/2 cup of Baking soda to your laundry to make liquid detergent work harder for you. A better balance of pH in the wash will get the clothes cleaner, fresher and brighter!
    7. CLEAN FURNITURE- Add a little bit of Baking Soda to a damp sponge and lightly rub onto furniture. This will remove marks (even crayon!)
    8. CARPET ODOR- Sprinkle Baking Soda directly on carpets and wait 15 minutes before vacuuming. This will help freshen your carpets and remove any odors.
    9. FRIDGE- Keep your fridge smelling good by keeping a box of baking soda in there.
    10. VEGGIE SCRUB- Sprinkle a little Baking Soda onto your produce, scrub and rinse. This is a safe way to clean dirt and residue off fresh fruit and vegetables.
    11. SILVER POLISH- Make a paste with 3 parts Baking Soda and 1 part water. Rub onto silver with a clean cloth and rinse thoroughly and dry.
    12. CLEAN PANS-  Simmer water and baking soda in a pan to remove burned food from a pan.
    13. DISHWASHER- Clean the dishwasher by running an empty cycle with Baking Soda.
    14. KEEP FLOWERS FRESH- Add 1 tsp of Baking Soda to the water to keep your flowers alive longer.
    15. GET RID OF ANTS – Mix one part baking soda and one part salt and sprinkle where there are ants.

My cat has peed on our bed a couple times and it’s the best cat urine cleaner I’ve ever found. First wash the area with vinegar and then let the baking soda sit for a few hours before vacuuming up. I’ve tried expensive cleaners but I can always still smell a hint of urine. With the vinegar and baking soda, there isn’t even a trace of smell!

My daughter is three months old, and my hair is still not quite how it was prior to my pregnancy, so the baking soda is still in rotation twice a month.

Spray immediately on stain, and watch the stain dissappear. I use a small fan to dry quickly.

When you change your sheets, sprinkle baking soda on the mattress, under the mattress cover. The next time you change your sheets, vacuum it up, and replace with fresh. Lay dryer sheets on top of the baking soda for extra freshnes. The baking soda will draw out dirt and odors, and the vacuuming will reduce the number of dust mites while sucking up the used baking soda.

I use Baking Soda to clean my pots and pans after dinner. Instead of scraping off left-over chili, eggs, etc. I fill the pot with a couple inches of water, add a good shake of Baking Soda, a drop or two of liquid dish soap and turn the burner on low. Cover the pot and let it sit for a few minutes while you do the other dishes. When you’re ready to tackle the pot, the residual food wipes right off. No muscle necessary!

I haven’t seen this listed but the new ceramic top stoves are somewhat difficult to clean. I sprinkle some directly on the stove top, put a hot towel over it, let sit (depending on stain) then scrub lightly in a circular motion. VOILA!!! works like a charm…just make sure all your baking powder is gone before using the stove top! Much cheaper than the cleaner made for this! I also use it in my stainless sink…sprinkle let sit, rub a little rinse ….
