How to Make Strawberry Turkeys

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Wash large strawberries and pat dry. Break pretzel sticks in half and stick a mini marshmallow into the broken end of the pretzel to create turkey legs.

In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the milk chocolate in 30 second intervals, stirring in between. When chocolate is almost melted, remove from microwave and stir until completely melted and smooth.

Dip the top of the marshmallow into the melted chocolate. Stick to the right side of your strawberry and hold 30 seconds to adhere. Repeat with the left side and all the remaining legs. Place in the fridge for 5 minutes to harden.

Holding the whole strawberry by the stem, dip into chocolate, turning to coat the entire strawberry and the legs. Let excess chocolate drip off then chill dipped chocolate covered turkey strawberries until chocolate has hardened.

Creative Ideas + Variations

  • Make turkey feet: Using melted white chocolate or white almond bark carefully dip the pretzel marshmallow leg ends into the chocolate to make feet.
  • Type of chocolate: Use milk chocolate chips, semi-sweet chocolate or dark chocolate melting wafers. You can even use a combination of a few for the turkey strawberries!
  • Instead of melting wafers: Use chocolate almond bark, chocolate chips, chocolate candy melts or a good quality chopped chocolate bar.
  • Stemless strawberries: Instead of keep the stems on your chocolate covered strawberry turkeys, remove them from top of each strawberry before dipping them. Use a skewer to dip them.
  • Get creative: Add candy corn to the top for feathers, use a sliver of the strawberry top for a wattle, make a beak or even use a small dab of white frosting for eyes.
  • DIY dessert: Instead of pre-making these for the dessert table, set out all the ingredients and let kids and adults help themselves to make their own chocolate turkeys.
  • Serving turkey strawberries: Serve on a turkey shaped platter, use a turkey as part of the name plates at dinner or package in cute boxes for guests take home.

Make Ahead and Storage Instructions

While these are best served on the day you make them, washing your strawberries the day before will allow them to dry completely so the chocolate adheres better when dipping them.

Store strawberries loosely covered in a container or on a plate up to two days. If you notice the chocolate falling off or the tops getting mushy, toss them.

Ingredients

  • 18 medium strawberries , washed and dried very well
  • 9 pretzel sticks , broken in half
  • 18 mini marshmallows
  • 8 ounces good quality milk or dark chocolate or melting wafers , chopped

Optional: white chocolate dip, candy eyes

    Instructions

    • Line a baking sheet or the counter with parchment or wax paper. Make sure your strawberries are washed and completely dry before beginning (any water will ruin them). I like to leave them on paper towels for a couple hours after washing.
    • Stick the marshmallow into the broken side of the pretzel. Repeat with remaining marshmallows and pretzels to create the turkey legs.
    • In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the milk chocolate at 50% power for 30 second intervals, stirring in between. When chocolate is almost melted, remove from microwave and stir until completely melted and smooth.
    • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Dip the top of the marshmallow into the melted chocolate. Stick to the side of a strawberry and hold 30 seconds, or until it adheres. Repeat with the other side and all the remaining legs. Place in the fridge for 5 minutes to harden.
    • Holding the strawberries by the stem, dip into the chocolate, turning to coat the entire strawberry and the legs. Let the chocolate drip for a moment before transferring to the baking sheet. Repeat with remaining strawberries. Chill 5 to 10 minutes, or until the chocolate has hardened.
    • Refrigerate until firm. Store strawberries in the refrigerator.

    Notes

Tip: Wash your strawberries the day before so they have time to completely dry.
White chocolate dip: Melt 2 ounces white chocolate according to the same directions as the milk chocolate. Holding the strawberries by the stem, gently dip the bottoms of each leg (marshmallow part) into the white chocolate to make the turkey’s feet.
