Christmas White Chocolate Hot Cocoa

It is officially hot chocolate season! While I definitely enjoy traditional homemade hot chocolate, my personal favorite is white chocolate hot cocoa. It’s buttery, creamy and piled up with whipped cream and marshmallows. Every sip is just heavenly!

This white hot chocolate is just as easy to make as the classic recipe and only requires 4 simple ingredients. Cook it on the stovetop in just 15 minutes, or let it simmer in the crockpot for a few hours. Either way, it’s the perfect treat to enjoy with the kids or to serve as a night cap at your next holiday party!

The Key Ingredient

The key ingredient to REALLY good white hot cocoa is high quality chocolate. When at the grocery store, look for a nice big bar of premium white chocolate like Ghirardelli or Bakers. Trust me, the good quality varieties make a big difference in taste and texture and tastes a million times better than using white chocolate chips.

Then just simply chop it into small pieces and then proceed to melt the chocolate on the stove with the milk, cinnamon and vanilla. The small pieces will melt faster and more evenly in the pan.

Crockpot Method

Making crockpot hot chocolate is just as easy! This is a great option if you’re serving a crowd. Just add the ingredients in your slow cooker, give it a stir and then cook on low for about 2 hours, stirring a few times throughout.

Toppings for White Chocolate Cocoa

Half of the fun about enjoying a mug of hot chocolate is adding extra garnish on top! Use any of the below to finish yours off, or make a hot chocolate charcuterie board with all the toppings and treats to serve at your next holiday party.

  • Marshmallows
  • Whipped cream
  • Crushed peppermint
  • Hot fudge
  • Candy canes
  • Sprinkles
  • Cinnamon
  • White chocolate shavings

Customize the Flavor

The beauty of this recipe is that you can easily tweak the flavor to make other variations. Add more cinnamon or nutmeg so it resembles a snickerdoodle hot chocolate. Or leave out the spice completely and replace the vanilla with peppermint extract. For a richer taste, substitute milk for half and half or heavy cream (or a combo of both).
