Healthy Fall Snack Idea

Baked apple chips are made by thinly slicing apples and baking them until they’re crispy. Seasoned with cinnamon they are a nutritious alternative to potato chips and great for lunch boxes along with a pumpkin chocolate chip cookie, of course!

These cinnamon baked apple chips are high on my list of guilt-free apple desserts, as well as cinnamon oat baked apples or crockpot apple butter. It’s one of my favorite healthy snacks to enjoy with a cup of hot chocolate in the fall!

Why This Recipe Works

  • Healthy. The perfect healthy snack to grab on-the-go, throw into lunch boxes or just to snack on while watching TV. They are amazing!
  • Just 3 ingredients. All you need is apples, sugar and cinnamon…that’s it! I bet you most likely already have all three of these ingredients in your fridge and pantry.
  • Inexpensive. Buying prepackaged store-bought apple chips can get a little pricey, so making them at home is cost effective and so simple!
  • Crispy and sweet. After baking in the oven, these dried apple chips have the perfect crunchy texture. The natural sweetness of the apples shines through, with the help of just a small amount of added sugar.

Only 3 Ingredients!

The best part about this apple chips recipe is that you only need 3 ingredients to make them. These homemade apple chips may be one of the easiest you’ll ever try!

  • Apples: This recipe is perfect to make after you go apple picking. Such a great way to use them up! Any variety that’s sweet and crisp will work. Some of my favorites are fuji, honey crisp, Jonathan and Melrose.
  • Sweetener: I like to add a few Tablespoons of sugar or maple syrup to give them a sweeter, more caramelized taste. If using maple syrup, make sure to use the real deal – no pancake syrup!
  • Cinnamon: I love the flavor that cinnamon adds! The spice from the cinnamon mixed with the sweetness from the sugar or maple syrup is such a delicious combination! For even more fall flavor, feel free to use an apple pie spice blend with cinnamon, nutmeg and all-spice.

Variations

Feel free to get creative with the spices you use! Sprinkle in some ginger, nutmeg or cardamom for more fall flavor, or swap the cinnamon for pumpkin pie spice.

You can also use other types of sweetener, such as coconut sugar or honey. A squirt of lemon juice would add a nice touch of flavor!

Best Apples to Use

Varieties that are sweet and crisp will give you the best baked apple chips result. A few favorites include:

  • Fuji apples
  • Honeycrisp
  • Jonathan
  • Melrose
  • Granny Smith
  • Pink Lady
  • Tango

How to Make Apple Chips in Oven

I used to think you needed a dehydrator in order to make fruit chips. Nope! You can easily bake apple chips in the oven. Just follow the simple steps below.

The process of making apple chips in a 4 step collage.
  1. Slice Preheat oven to 225ºF and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Slice the apples and then lay out on top of baking sheets (make sure they don’t touch).
  2. Mix. Mix together the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Then sprinkle the mixture over the tops of the apples. If using maple syrup, simply brush the tops.
  3. Bake. Place both baking sheets in the prepared oven and bake for 1 1/2 hours. Flip apples over and continue baking for 1 more hour, or until the apples have reached your desired crispiness.

Expert Tips

  • Slice the apples thin. The thinner they are, the quicker they’ll cook and the more crispy they’ll get. It’s important to cut them into same sized slices too, so that they evenly cook in the oven. If you have a mandoline, you can use that instead of a knife if preferred.
  • Spread in a single layer. Make sure none of the slices are touching and spread them out evenly on your pan. This way they don’t stick together and all of the outsides will get crispy and delicious.
  • Cook low and slow. The key to getting perfectly crispy baked apple chips is to bake them at a low heat (225ºF) and cook them for several hours (about 2 1/2 hours). No need to use a fancy dehydrator to make these – the oven works just fine!

Recipe FAQs

Are apple chips healthy?

Yes! Apples are loaded with fiber and antioxidants, while cinnamon is known to reduce inflammation.

This apple chip recipe does contain a small amount of sugar to help boost the sweetness, but you could easily swap sugar for maple syrup or leave it out completely for a more tart taste. They will be delicious either way!

How do you cut apples into chips?

You can use a mandoline or sharp knife to thinly slice the apples into rounds that are about 1/8-inch thick. A mandoline will be quicker to work with and give you more uniform slices, however a knife will work just as well!

What can I use to core an apple?

An apple corer will be your easiest option, although you can also use a pairing knife or a small cookie cutter to remove the core as well.

How long will they stay fresh?

They will keep for up to 1 week if stored in an airtight container or bag at room temperature.

Crispy and sweet cinnamon apple chips baked in the oven. Such an easy, healthy and delicious snack idea made with just 3 ingredients!
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 2 hours 30 minutes
Total Time: 2 hours 40 minutes
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 2-3 apples , thinly sliced (I used Fuji)
  • 2 ½ Tablespoons granulated sugar (or maple syrup)
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 225ºF. Arrange the apple slices in an even layer on two parchment-lined baking sheets.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over the apples. If using maple syrup, simply brush on the tops of the apples.
  • Place both baking sheets in the oven and bake 1 1/2 hours. Flip apples over and continue baking 1 more hour, or until the apples are crispy. Let cool and enjoy!

Notes

Apples: Fuji are my favorite, but Golden Delicious, Gala, and Pink Lady work really well, too.
Spices: Try adding cardamom or ginger to the cinnamon or replace it with pumpkin pie spice for a fun twist on flavor.
Storage: Store in an airtight container up to 1 week.
