Bathroom makeover on the cheap + $1 art

Soo you know those projects you start and then never finish? Yup… that was my guest bathroom! I stenciled the ceiling over a year ago and then never got around to finishing it. It was just one of those things I put off. Last weekend we finally got it done! I didn’t want to go over the top and spend a lot of money, but I did a few simple things that I think made a big difference! Here’s some fun tips… and scroll down to the bottom if you’d like to purchase the $1 art for your bathroom!

5 quick tips:

  1. Give the walls a new fresh coat of paint! This is the cheapest way to change the look of a room!
  2. Frame the mirror. You can find a great DIY tutorial here.
  3. Paint over the cheap cabinets and update the hardware. Hobby Lobby has great hardware for really cheap.
  4. Shop at thrift stores for decor you can up-cycle.
  5. Update the plumbing and light fixtures. I found mine at Lamps Plus. Watch for sales.

I found the gorgeous frame at Savers 2 years ago and it has been sitting in my garage this whole time. Can you believe it?! I finally pulled out my white spray paint and it looks good as new! I found things from around the house to put in the holes and my son added the animals in the bottom two. He’s such a good helper. I left them there, because they actually look kinda cute, don’t you think?! This is the guest/kids bathroom so it totally works!

I also found two old mason jars and spray painted the lids with hammered metal spray paint. Then I filled them with cotton balls and q tips.

Love my lighting found at Lamps Plus. I also love this soap from Target. The packaging is so pretty. I also made some more sugar scrub. It dresses up the sink a little bit. ;)

These are the cute knobs at found at Hobby Lobby. They were $4 each! Score!

You may remember when I stenciled my ceiling here. I love the look! My neck still hurts thinking about it though…

I just posted my bathroom remodel this morning on my blog. I love your stenciled ceiling. I also painted cabinets and replaced hardware for an updated look. A new shower curtain can also make a drastic difference for a little bit of money.

This is so cute!!!! I love that stenciling, but man, that would break the neck! I never thought to spray paint regular mason jar lids to coordinate with my antique jars/lids – good idea!

Love it. Not cluttered and nice clean lines. The stenciling on the ceiling is wonderful but my aching back and neck. LOL Keep up the good work.

Was the cabinet/mirror thing above your toilet done when you bought it or did you add the shelves? I love that!! Totally what we need in our tiny bathroom.

Hi Heather! We actually just bought it at Lowes. It was only $40. Totally worth it! :)

What a lovely bathroom……great ideas! But the stenciled ceiling is outstanding. I know that was an enormous undertaking…….but soooo worth it!

Love the shadow box/ frame exactly how was that done and/or where was it purchased?

    • Jamielyn posted on January 8, 2014 at 1:11 pm (#

I wish I could tell you where to buy one but this frame was a random find at a thrift store several years ago and spray I painted it white! You could look at Hobby Lobby or Michael’s to see if they have something similar! :)

      • Marla posted on February 2, 2014 at 10:02 pm (#

what did you put the frame on to make the box and shelf?>

      • Jamielyn posted on February 13, 2014 at 9:47 pm (#

I bought the frame with the shelves in them and then painted them!

  13. Rikki posted on July 16, 2014 at 4:40 pm (#

So I saw this on pinterest and completely fell in love with the shelving that you have above the toilet. I saw in a previous comment that you got the frame at a thrift store but the box you got at lowes? Also is this a shadow box or a storage box?

    • Jamielyn posted on July 23, 2014 at 10:35 pm (#

Hi Rikki! I actually got the wood for the frame around the mirror at Lowe’s, but I found the shadow box at a thrift store and spray painted it white! Sorry for the confusion! :)
