Cherishing those unexpected moments

With two young kids I find that things never go according to plan. Things are always unexpected and I have begun to love those unexpected moments. I remember when my son first started his “destructive phase” I would be so anxious with his every move. I was constantly cleaning up after him. One day I realized I needed to just let him do his thing. I know some mom’s who never let their kids get dirty and never even let their kids play with their toys because of the mess they will make and I just didn’t want to be that mom. I am a creative type by nature and needed to embrace that trait my son has…even it it was messy at first. ;)

Carson is VERY curios…sometimes TOO curious (remember all the things he destroyed here). He asks lots of questions and wants to know how everything works. I’m told it’s a sign of intelligence. And he is after all a BOY!!

Anyways… I guess what I’m trying to say is I’ve learned to let my son just have fun, get messy (no, not all the time-ha) and be CREATIVE. I’ve learned to actually get down and dirty WITH him. One day in particular I remember working on a craft for a company I was working with. I had a deadline to make and was in a bit of rush. As I turned to get something Carson sneaked up on to the table. He started painting on the project I had just started working on. My first instinct was to yell at him to get down… but instead I walked over there and helped him HELP me. You should of seen his face light up when I asked if he wanted to help me finish painting. I could tell he felt so wanted and appreciated. That moment was so special for both of us.

It was in that moment I learned to LET my kids help me. I’ve learned to create teachable moments instead of always putting my son in time out. ;) Sometimes it’s not easy and it actually creates more of a mess… but it’s unexpected moments like those that I cherish most.

  1. I love this post. I’ve been learning to figure out ways to let my 3 year old help me. She loves sitting on my lap and watching me sew. I let her push the reverse button when I need to back stitch. Some days it is SO hard to have patience with her extreme amount of energy, but she gets it from me so I can’t blame her too much!

  2. I can SO identify with this! My son is about the same age and he loves to be involved in what I’m doing. At first I was really particular about things I was doing and wouldn’t let him help…now I realize that it’s more important to do things together! Nothing is so important that I can’t let my son sit and help me with it, and these little unexpected moments are the ones that he’ll remember for the rest of his life.
