Homemade Steak Seasoning

Keep your pantry stocked with a variety of homemade blends. Chili seasoning, hamburger seasoning, and taco seasoning are a few of my favorites. They’re versatile, interchangeable, and brimming with flavor!

Having your own steak dry rub on hand ready to go at all times can be a game-changer. Because of its long shelf life, it’ll carry you through the summers by the grill or winters cooking steak and potatoes on the stove or nice, juicy steaks in the oven.

Elevate your tastebud experience with the BEST steak rub around. Permeate immense flavor into not just your steak, but all your meat including grilled chicken, chicken wings, slow cooker ribs, you name it. It’s more cost-effective and much healthier than storebought and it takes just mere minutes to make!

8 Simple Ingredients

  • Salt: We like to use Kosher salt, but you can use what you have. As salt does, it brings out the individual flavors of the blend and balances the sweetness.
  • Brown sugar: Gives it a hint of sweetness.
  • Black pepper: Salt’s partner in crime, but also gives it a grounding earthy note.
  • Paprika: Adds a smoky flavor. If you have smoked paprika, you can use that too. Keep in mind you’re upping the smoky level a notch.
  • Chili powder: The kick! It packs a punch and gives it that signature smoky heat.
  • Garlic powder: Infuses the meat with a garlic aroma without using fresh garlic.
  • Onion powder: Steak and onion go hand in hand. Adding the onion flavor just makes sense.
  • Cornstarch: Adding cornstarch to your meat before you cook it, will help give it a lovely sear. A steakhouse-style crust is everything!

How to Make Steak Seasoning Rub

  1. Combine: Mix all the seasonings together in a small bowl.
  2. Rub: If using it right away, rub it all over your steak and let it rest for at least 15 minutes. Longer in the fridge, if possible.

How Much of the Rub Should I use on my Steak?

A typical rule of thumb is to use about 2 tsp of seasoning per 1 pound of meat. Sometimes it’s trial and error, you’ll know the next time whether you want to add more or less.

Storage and Shelf Life

Keep any remaining seasoning in a jar with a lid. This steak rub recipe will keep fresh for up to 6 months if stored properly. You’ll never run out of reasons to use it, so feel free to make lots!
