My husband LOVES it and could probably eat it everyday. It’s one of my favorite meals too. The kids even love it…and they are PICKY! It’s definitely one of our all time favorite and EASY recipes to make. We usually have all the ingredients on hand and it’s something that I usually make without a recipe. Just dump and taste.
Everyone I’ve made this recipe for always asks for the recipe. I first got this recipe from my husband’s grandma. All the family had gotten together for an event and this soup was served with chips and all the toppings. I was pregnant with my first son and it was the one thing that had tasted good in a long time. After that I made this recipe atleast once a month and couldn’t wait to eat the leftovers.  It reheats really well.  I promise it’s super easy to make. If my husband can make this …you can too! ;)

How To Make Taco Soup

  1. Brown hamburger in a large pan over medium heat. Add in the onions, bell peppers and saute for a few minutes.
  2. Add in the remaining ingredients and stir until combined. Let simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Top with sour cream and cheese. Serve with tortilla chips. Enjoy!Taco soup recipe


How To Freeze Taco Soup

  1. Allow the soup to cool down
  2. Place into a zip top bag or freezer container (leaving room for it to expand)
  3. Place in the freezer. It will stay good for up to six months in the freezer.
  4. When ready to reheat, place in the refrigerator or microwave to thaw. Then simmer in a pot over low heat.
  5. If I want to make it go further, sometimes I’ll add in an extra can of beans and tomatoes with a little more taco seasoning.

  • 1 pound  hamburger or turkey burger
  • 1-2 Tablespoons taco seasoning more or less to taste
  • 1 medium sweet onion chopped finely
  • 1 green bell pepper chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper chopped
  • 1 15 oz can black beans drained
  • 1 15 oz can kindey beans drained
  • 1 15 oz can pinto or white beans drained and rinsed (optional)
  • 1 15 oz can corn
  • 1 15 oz can tomato sauce
  • 1 10 oz can rotel tomato’s
  • 1 15 oz can diced tomato’s
  • 1/4 cup salsa fresh is best


  1. Brown hamburger in a large pan over medium heat. Add in the onions, bell peppers and saute for a few minutes.
  2. Add in the remaining ingredients and stir until combined. Let simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. You can add a little water if it starts getting too thick. If you have more time let it simmer longer. You could also put this soup in a crock pot and let cook on low for several hours.
  3. Top with sour cream and cheese. Serve with tortilla chips. Enjoy!

    • I have been making Taco Soup for 6 months, My cholesterol has dropped to normal level and hopefully it will stay there. I made up my own recipe for Taco Soup but I will definitely be trying yours. I must tell you that is all I eat for dinner almost every night but it did it’s job.

  10. Made it tonight. I did all 3 beans, being that I am a vegetarian and was a little worried at first look. However, after letting it simmer the juices surrounded the vegetables and beans and it was tasty.

    • We have another Taco Soup Recipe, similar to yours but with white corn and ranch dressing mix. (I’ll have to find a way to share it somewhere someday.) But my point here is that I make ours Vegetarian style. To “look” the role of meat I add lentils, about a cup cooked for each pound of hamburger called for. It looks the role of meat with it’s color and texture. My family loves it this way, and it works for other recipes as well.

  23. We don’t have Rotel in Canada. I thought it was like salsa but you also add salsa, so what could I use as a substitute?

  24. Sounds great but have a question. Do you drain the can of corn and tomatoes before adding or do you add with the juices?

  33. I see a couple people saying that they are going to cook this in the crock-pot but I don’t see how long and if to put it on low or high. Any recommendations? Also are the beans drained? 

    • Yes! Cook on low for several hours (do brown hamburger in a skillet first), perhaps six or so hours. And yes, drain (and rinse, if you like) the beans first.

    This was amazing and easy! I used low sodium options of the canned items and ground turkey, also added some colored peppers. It is so customizable–turn the “heat” up or down. It was great with sliced avocado and sour cream, and others loved it with chips and cheese! It’s on my board of “keepers”!  Bring it on, cold weather, l’m ready!

      They are called tortilla strips. I find them in the same aisle at the grocery story with chips.

      They are perfect for adding a little crunch to soups and salads! :)
