Traditional Irish Soda Bread

16 servings

Flour Granulated sugar Baking powder, baking soda, salt Kerrygold Irish butter Buttermilk Egg

Mix dry ingredients

Mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Cut in butter with pastry cutter.

Add wet ingredients

Stir in buttermilk and egg and combine

Knead dough

Turn dough out onto a floured surface and knead with hands until the bread forms a ball. Brush dough with melted butter and buttermilk.

Shape dough

Cut the dough in half to make 2 smaller loaves or 1 large loaf. Press it down and round the edges and then cut an ‘X’ in the top of the loaf.

Bake at 350°F for 45 to 55 minutes, brushing the remaining buttermilk mixture on top halfway through.

Sweet Version with Raisins

Mix in 1 cup of raisins. Sprinkle with sugar after brushing the butter on top before baking.

Expert Tip

Don't overmix your dough. A shaggy dough leads to a craggy crust which is what we are after in this bread.

Enjoy warm with jam, butter or honey!
