Potatoes Au Gratin Recipe

Layers of thinly sliced potatoes smothered in a cheesy cream sauce topped with an extra layer of cheese, and baked until golden and bubbly. Classic potatoes au gratin is made with humble ingredients, can be made ahead, and is a budget-friendly way to feed a crowd!

Ingredients

Potatoes Onion Butter, garlic, flour Salt and pepper Milk Cheddar cheese

Arrange potatoes

Layer 1/2 of the sliced potatoes on the bottom of a greased 8x8 dish.

Add onions

Evenly disperse the sliced onion overtop potatoes then place the other half of the potatoes overtop.

Make cheese sauce

Melt butter over medium heat then add the garlic, whisk in flour, salt and pepper. Lower heat and whisk in milk then stir in cheese.

Add sauce to potatoes

Pour cheese sauce over layered potatoes.

Bake

Cover with foil and bake at 400 degrees for one hour. Remove foil and bake uncovered 20-30 minutes.

Rest then serve

Let the potatoes au gratin cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Make Ahead

Prep ahead by assembling the casserole then baking it covered for 30 minutes. Cool completely and store in fridge. When ready to serve, bring to room temp and bake uncovered 20-30 minutes.
