Easy Sourdough French Toast
I love any kind of easy French toast recipe, from French bread French toast to a French toast casserole! My latest obsession, however, is sourdough French toast because there’s just something special about the combination of tangy bread with a sweet custard batter.
It’s golden brown on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and perfect for a holiday breakfast, special brunch, or just because!
Why I Love This Recipe
- No soggy bread! French toast with sourdough bread is hearty enough to hold up nicely to the custard batter.
- Simple yet special. Dress it up with fresh berries and whipped cream for brunch or keep it simple with maple syrup for everyday mornings.

- Half-and-half & large eggs: You can also use whole milk or heavy cream. For dairy free try coconut milk, oat milk, or almond milk.
- For the custard: Light brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
- Sourdough bread: Even better if it’s a loaf of day-old bread. Cut it to about 3/4” thick. I have a great homemade sourdough bread recipe I like to use.
- For topping: Fresh berries, fresh fruit, powdered sugar, Nutella, whipped cream, jam, homemade maple syrup, etc.
How to Make Sourdough French Toast
Combine the custard ingredients in a blender and pulse until smooth. You can also do this in a bowl with a whisk.
Melt butter in a preheated 350°F griddle or skillet over medium-high heat. Dip the bread into the egg mixture and flip it over so it’s nicely coated on both sides.
Cook the bread on the hot griddle for 1-2 minutes per side. Once it is nicely golden on both sides, move on to the next slice. Whisk the custard mixture as needed between batches.
Serve immediately with your favorite toppings. We love fresh strawberries, blueberries, and maple syrup. Sometimes we’ll add a dusting of powdered sugar on special occasions!
Tips for the Best Sourdough French Toast
- To keep your French toast sourdough warm until you’re ready to eat, place them on a foil-lined baking sheet in the oven at 175°F.
- Sourdough bread is pretty sturdy as is, but ideally, you want day-old bread. Also, keep the slices of bread thick.
- Dip the bread to soak up enough of the custard, but not so much that it’s soggy! You can shake off excess back into the bowl if needed.
- Cooking in melted butter adds great flavor! Oil can be used as well.

We love using sourdough bread for french toast and this one turned out absolutely perfectly! Never thought to add a little bit of brown sugar to the egg mixture before, but it will be an addition from now on. – recipe tester, Alisha
