Quick and Easy American Goulash Recipe
This easy goulash recipe is a cozy, one-pot dinner made with ground beef, elbow noodles, and a savory tomato sauce. It’s hearty, budget-friendly comfort food that’s perfect for busy weeknights.
Unlike Hungarian goulash, American goulash is quick, saucy, and all cooked in one pot, so there’s no need to boil pasta separately. If you love easy dinners with minimal cleanup, this quick and easy American goulash belongs right alongside homemade hamburger helper, tater tot casserole and easy hamburger casserole.
Ingredient Notes

Find the full printable recipe with specific measurements below.
- Ground beef: I like to use 80/20 lean ground beef.
- Macaroni noodles: Other small noodles work like small shells or penne.
- Beef broth: Vegetable or chicken broth work if that is what you have on hand.
- Tomatoes: This recipes uses tomato sauce along with petite diced tomatoes.
- Vegetables: I like to add in onion, red bell pepper and corn. If you like green peppers that can be used.
- Seasonings: I use my homemade Italian seasoning but store-bought is fine.
- Cheddar cheese: While optional, I always melt sharp cheddar cheese on top before serving.
How to Make Goulash
Brown the beef, onion and peppers in large pot or large Dutch oven over medium-high heat until brown. Drain any fat, then add in garlic, Italian seasoning, seasoned salt and Worcestershire sauce for flavor. Cook 1-2 more minutes.

Stir in diced tomatoes, corn, broth and tomato sauce and bring to light simmer. Then add in uncooked elbow macaroni to the meat sauce, stir and cover with lid.

Continue to cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring every few minutes to prevent sticking. Salt and pepper to taste then if desired, sprinkle with cheese and cover for about 1 minute, until cheese has melted. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley.

Recipe Tips
- Use ground turkey or ground chicken in place of the ground beef. Try Italian sausage for a different flavor!
- Additional vegetables like peas, green beans, shredded carrots, chopped celery or mushrooms can be added.
- For some extra creaminess, add up to a cup of sour cream at the end.
- If you like your American goulash recipe a little more of a soup consistency add an extra cup of broth, water, or tomato sauce.
- Add a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for some heat or some smoked paprika.
- My Instant Pot goulash is an easier hands off way to make this dish.
Goulash Serving Suggestions
This classic American goulash is rich and hearty, so I love serving it with a simple salad and artisan bread or garlic bread to soak up the flavorful sauce.
For a cozy weeknight meal, add roasted vegetables or serve it with a slice of cornbread. Both pair perfectly with this quick and comforting dinner that the whole family loves.

I’m not a fan of mushrooms or cooked celery so I added some peas, next time I plan on using green beans. Also, I added an extra cup of noodles. Yum, yum, yum….thank you😊

Great!
Valerie
Made this tonight overall it was good but it was too salty. It would have been fine with only 1 teaspoon of seasoned salt.

I’m glad you enjoyed it, Valerie :) Thanks for your comment and review!

I have picky eaters who do not like chunks of tomatoes. Could I use more tomato sauce in place of the diced tomatoes? Thanks for sharing!
Jamielyn Nye
Hi Michelle! You could use 1/2 can tomato sauce or sometimes I like to use petite diced tomatoes or crushed.

This is a family favorite of ours. I was curious on the nutrition , I’m trying to figure out macros, how much is in a serving? The nutrition at the bottom, is that for one serving, and if so how much is one serving? Thanks so much for your help!
Jamielyn Nye
We typically just divide into 8 bowls. If you want exact amounts, I’d recommend weighing your pot. Then at the end weigh it again with the goulash and then subtract the pot weight. Then you can divide by 8.

This is a recipe I’ve gone to several times. I had never tried one pot recipes before, and this one is everything it promises, fast, easy, and delicious. Finally, if you don’t have something this recipe is forgiving and adapts easily to anything you have on hand. Thank you for sharing this! My picky family always gobbles it right up.

I am ano milk of dairy cheese what brand should I go for to add to the Goulash to make it cheesy
Jamielyn Nye
My favorite cheese to top it with is shredded Tilamook cheese.
Kristina
If I want dairy free cheese added what brand should I use to make it cheesey
Jamielyn Nye
It all depends on your preference. My sister in law is dairy free and uses daiya. The cheese is optional though, so if you need to leave it off, that is fine! :)

Love this recipe!! Even my picky 3 year old eats every bite! I follow to it exactly as written, and sometimes add carrots at the beginning with the onion and pepper. Also, I’ve used fresh sweet corn off the cob in place of the canned corn, and it’s soooo tasty! Thanks for sharing such an easy and delicious comfort food recipe. ♥️

I haven’t made this yet, but am looking forward to doing so. Should the can of diced tomatoes and can of corn be drained before adding to the pot?
Jamielyn Nye
You don’t need to drain the cans. :)
