Hawaiian Pineapple Fluff
This Hawaiian pineapple fluff is one of those recipes I keep coming back to all summer. It’s creamy, a little tropical, and basically tastes like a piña colada in dessert form. Five ingredients, no baking, and about ten minutes of real work.
It’s my go-to for BBQs and potlucks because it travels well and everyone always asks for the recipe. Set out some vanilla wafers and fresh fruit next to it and it doubles as a fruit dip too. If you love easy fruit desserts like my strawberry banana cheesecake salad or raspberry fluff, you’ll want this one in the rotation.
Ingredient Notes

Find the full printable recipe with directions below.
- Crushed pineapple: Use a 20 oz can and don’t drain it. The juice is what carries the flavor. If yours looks especially wet, drain off a couple tablespoons so the fluff doesn’t turn soupy.
- Vanilla instant pudding: One 3.4 oz box. Stir the dry powder straight in, no need to make the pudding first.
- Cool Whip: An 8 oz container, thawed. Store-bought keeps it easy, or use my homemade Cool Whip. Real whipped cream works but will deflate faster.
- Mini marshmallows: About 1 ½ cups. They keep the texture light and pillowy.
- Shredded coconut: ¾ cup sweetened. Toast it first if you want a deeper, more tropical flavor.
- Optional add-ins: Chopped macadamia nuts or pecans for crunch, and chopped maraschino cherries for color and a little extra sweetness.
To make it: Stir the crushed pineapple and dry pudding mix together, then chill 5 minutes. Fold in the Cool Whip, marshmallows, and coconut (plus nuts or cherries if using). Cover and refrigerate 1 to 2 hours until set.

How to Serve Pineapple Fluff
You can scoop this into a bowl and serve it as is, but it’s a lot more fun in a pineapple boat. Slice a pineapple in half lengthwise, run your knife around the inside edge, and scoop out the fruit. Add any extra fruit and juice from the boat right into the fluff, because the more pineapple flavor the better. Here’s my full guide on how to cut a pineapple if you want the step by step.
It also doubles as a fruit dip. Set it out with fresh fruit, vanilla wafers, pretzels, or graham crackers, and for more of a piña colada flavor, I’ll sprinkle a little toasted coconut on top.

Can you make this with fresh pineapple instead of canned?
Sarah @IHeartNaptime
It has not been tested and you would need to crush it to be equivalent to the canned version with juices. So you may need to adjust some things.
Nancy A Reffle
I drained the crushed pineapple juice and only added 2 Tablespoons of the juice. Very nice! Not Soupy!

How long can this stay chilled
I Heart Naptime
I think you could make it a day ahead of time if needed. Just cover tightly with plastic wrap and store in the fridge until ready to serve. Right before serving, drain some of the liquid and stir very well. Any leftovers should keep in the fridge for 1-2 days.

Do you mix the vanilla pudding mix according to package directions or do you mix the powder with the pineapple.
Jamielyn
You just mix the dry powder in with the pineapple :)

Hello from Australia :) What is Cool Whip? Can you suggest a food to substitute please?please?
Jamielyn
Hi Katinka! You can use whipping cream in place of Cool Whip!
Candy
Cool whip is whipping cream in a container in frozen food aisle…
You could\maybe use home-made whipping cream in place of Cool whip…
