This recipe started with my original cake mix cookies, a reader favorite that’s become a whole series.
Ingredients Notes

- Chocolate cake mix: I use a 13.25-ounce box, and after testing many brands, Betty Crocker is my favorite. A 15.25-ounce box works fine here too.
- Salted butter: Melted butter gives these cookies their rich, fudgy texture. If you only have unsalted, add a pinch of salt. You can use canola or vegetable oil, but I prefer better for the texture.
- Eggs: Two large eggs bind everything together and keep the centers soft.
- White chocolate (optional): A quick drizzle over the tops makes these look bakery quality with almost no effort.
How to Make Chocolate Cake Mix Cookies
In a large bowl, stir the cake mix, melted butter, and eggs until combined. If you have time, refrigerate the dough 15 to 20 minutes. It’s a sticky dough, so chilling makes it easier to work with.

Using a medium cookie scoop or spoon, scoop the dough onto parchment lined baking sheet. Press a few chocolate chips on top of each one if desired. Bake 9 to 11 minutes at 350°F, or until the cookies are set.

Let the cookies cool a couple of minutes on the baking sheet, then transfer to a cooling rack. For the drizzle, melt the white chocolate in the microwave at 50% power in short bursts, stirring until smooth. Drizzle over the tops with a spoon.

Recipe Tips
- If the dough seems dry, stir in a teaspoon of melted butter or oil at a time until it’s thick and sticky. This can happen if using larger boxes of cake mix.
- Use a cookie scoop so the cookies are all the same size and bake evenly.
- Don’t overbake. It’s hard to tell when chocolate cake mix cookies are finished baking since the dark color hides the visual cues. Pull them out as soon as the edges are set, and they’ll firm up as they cool.
- Try other flavors. Any box of cake mix works to make these cookies including yellow cake mix, white cake mix or even funfetti.
- Add your favorite mix-ins: Any chocolate chips, extracts such as vanilla, mint, or almond, or try dipping the cooled cookies in melted chocolate.
