Easy Oven Baked Chicken Parmesan
Chicken parmesan is one of those classic and delicious Italian dishes that you can’t go wrong with, it’s my husband’s all-time favorite meal. It’s super crispy, flavorful, and delicious…no wonder it’s so popular!
I’ve made quite a few versions, including chicken parm meatballs, and this baked chicken parmesan is still our favorite. It’s healthier and easier than frying it in butter. If your family prefers plain chicken, check out my baked chicken breast recipe.
Ingredients
With a few staple ingredients you have ready in your pantry and refrigerator, you can make this easy baked chicken parmesan any night of the week!

Find the full printable recipe with specific measurements below.
- Chicken breasts: Boneless, skinless chicken breast works best for this classic Italian dish. I use 3 breasts and then slice each in half to create 6 chicken cutlets.
- Eggs: The whisked eggs are essentially the ‘glue’ that helps the bread crumb mixture stick to the chicken.
- Bread crumbs: You can use either panko bread crumbs or Italian bread crumbs. If I have homemade breadcrumbs, I add those for unique flavor.
- Cheese: There are 2 types of cheese used. First I used 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese to include in the bread crumb coating. Then I used fresh sliced mozzarella to add on top of the marinara at the end. Provolone could be subbed for the mozz.
- Marinara: Both marinara sauce and spaghetti sauce work great in this recipe. Feel free to use store-bought tomato sauce or homemade.
- Spices: Garlic powder, salt, and pepper are used to season this baked chicken parm.
How to Make Baked Chicken Parmesan
Cut chicken in half horizontally to create 6 fillets. Then place the fillets in a zip-top bag (or between parchment paper) and flatten them with a meat tenderizer.
Whisk eggs in a bowl with salt and pepper. Then place bread crumbs, parmesan, and garlic powder in a separate shallow dish. Dip each fillet in egg, then place in breadcrumb mixture and cover completely.

Add fillets to a baking sheet and bake at 415° until the meat is no longer pink in middle, about 20-25 minutes. Flip halfway through.

Remove from oven and spoon 1/4 cup marinara over top. Then place the mozzarella slice on top of the sauce. Place back in the oven and bake until cheese is melted, 3-5 minutes. Broil last minute if desired for a more crispy chicken parmesan.

Top chicken parmigiana with fresh basil or oregano and serve with pasta if desired.

This recipe was great! Delicious and easy to make! I followed your suggestion of frying them a little beforehand, and they were nice and crispy! I did use thighs instead of breasts, and fresh sliced mozzarella. Will definitely be making again!

Hi I made this the other night. How do you get the breaking to brown? I was skeptical that it would work since there was no oil to brown it and as expected, the chicken was cooked but the breaking was not brown nor crispy. I fixed it by finishing off the chicken in a pan with oil. Then it looked and tasted delicious. I’m just not sure how you get the breaking to brown with no oil. It didn’t work for me!
Jamielyn
Hi Katie! If my chicken isn’t browning, I will broil it for 1-2 minutes and that usually does the trick! Great idea to finish it with oil if you want it crispy! :)
Jan
Sounds good. Will have to fix this for supper.

How do you keep your chicken from creating a lot of juice and being soggy. This is my main problem with baking my own chicken with any kind of batter.
Jamielyn
Hi Miranda! I had the same problem before, but with this recipe you just add the sauce during the last 5 minutes of baking time. It came out perfectly for me. You could even heat it separately and add it onto the plate. Enjoy!
Jen
This chicken is amazing and is something even I can even pull off. haha :)
