Decorated Oreo Christmas Cookies

‘Tis the season to be making (and eating) holiday treats to share with family and friends. These Christmas Oreos are a fun holiday version of chocolate covered Oreos that are decorated with adorable Christmas trees and snowflakes.

They are dipped in smooth, melted chocolate and make a great addition to any Christmas dessert board or holiday gift idea, include some Christmas Oreo balls, too, and everyone will love you!

You only need 2 ingredients and they are the perfect dessert for the kids to help out with. My kids had so much fun decorating them with me!

These would also go perfectly with my snowman oreo balls, peppermint oreo balls and my homemade oreos.

Why This Recipe Works

  • Quick and cute. These Christmas Oreos only take a few minutes to prepare yet they are so impressive when they’re done.
  • Kid-friendly. Get the kids involved in helping to dip and decorate these Christmas Oreos for some wonderful holiday memories.
  • No-bake dessert. That’s right. No need to turn on the oven.
  • Perfect treat. If you love Oreo cookies, you will love them taken up a notch with all the delightful decorations on these Christmas Oreos.

Recipe Ingredients

Depending on how you decide to decorate (but, really, why choose?), you will need different ingredients. The basics, however, are Oreos, chocolate candy melts, and decorations.

  • Oreos: You can use regular Oreos, double-stuffed Oreos, or peppermint Oreos.
  • Melting wafers: I love to use white chocolate and chocolate melting wafers. They create a smooth finish.
  • Decorations: Depending on what look you’re going for you can use gel writers, sprinkles, M&M’s and candy eyes.

Variations

  • Make white chocolate oreos, milk chocolate or dark chocolate depending on flavor preference.
  • Make Christmas Oreos with different flavors, such as peppermint Oreos.
  • Decorate with colored sprinkles.
  • Top with chopped nuts.
  • Add crushed candy canes.
  • Sprinkle the top with crushed Oreo crumbs.
  • Place on a lollypop stick before dipping and then wrap in cellophane.

How to Make Christmas Oreos

The real key to making these cute Christmas Oreos is having fun with decorating.

Showing how to make Christmas oreos in a 4 step collage.
  1. Melt your chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave at 50% power. Stir until smooth.
  2. Dip your Oreos with a fork. Tap the fork on the edge of the bowl to remove any excess.
  3. Place on wax or parchment paper lined baking sheet. Draw a circle around the Oreo with a toothpick if there is excess so that it will dry with clean lines.

Christmas Oreo Decorations

Once the Christmas Oreos have been dipped in the right chocolate color for their decoration, it’s time to decorate! We love making the five different versions below:

For snowmen: While the white chocolate is still wet, place 2 candy eyes for eyes and 1 orange M&M perpendicular to the cookie as the carrot nose. Let harden completely and then pipe 5 black dots for the mouth.

For Christmas trees: Let the milk chocolate harden completely. Fill a piping bag with melted green candy melts and pipe a Christmas tree shape in the center of the Oreo. Cover the tree in sprinkles. Add a dab of melted chocolate to a pearl and place on top of the tree. Once hardened, dip bottom in melted white chocolate.

For reindeer: While the milk chocolate is still wet, add 2 candy eyes and 1 red M&M for the nose. Place 2 pretzel halves on top for the antlers.

For Santa suits: Let the red candy coating harden completely. Pipe a line of black gel across the lower center as the belt. Add a dab of melted chocolate to 1 yellow M&M and 3 pearls. Place the M&M in the center of the belt as the buckle. Right above it, add the 3 pearls as buttons.

For sprinkles: While the white or milk chocolate is still wet, sprinkle with festive sprinkles. Let set completely.

Tips for Making Chocolate Dipped Oreos

  • Use high-quality chocolate (not chips). I highly recommend the Ghirardelli melting wafers for taste and texture.
  • Make sure your chocolate is smooth before dipping.
  • Place parchment paper on a baking sheet to make it easy to transfer.
  • Make sure to remove excess chocolate from the bottom of the Oreo before placing onto the paper. If there’s too much of a spill around, simply draw a circle with a toothpick around the base.
  • Store in an airtight container for 1 to 2 weeks.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make this Christmas Oreos recipe in advance?

Absolutely! These treats will keep in an airtight container up to 3 weeks, so feel free to decorate early and then have them on hand throughout the season.

Why is the coating on my Christmas Oreos not firming up?

Sometimes when my kitchen is too warm, the candy melts take a while to set. Pop the cookies into the fridge to help speed up the hardening process.

What are some packaging ideas for gifting?

Some festive packaging really adds to these if you are gifting! Add a few to a mason jar and tie with a holiday ribbon and gift tag. You could also buy seasonal treat bags and tie with a ribbon, or place some in a reusable holiday baking tin.

Storing

These adorable Christmas Oreos will keep in an airtight container at room temperature up to 3 weeks.

Instructions

Base

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a medium, microwave-safe bowl, add the chocolate candy melting wafers (type of candy wafer depends on decoration). Heat 1 minute at 50% power and stir. Continue to heat 30 second intervals at 50% power until melted, stirring well in-between. Make sure there are no lumps in the chocolate and that it is smooth and easy to stir. You may also use a double broiler, if preferred.
  • Place the Oreos on a fork and dip into the melted chocolate. Turn to coat completely in chocolate. When the entire cookie is covered with chocolate, lift it out using the fork. Tap the fork on the side of the bowl several times to let the excess chocolate drip off.
  • Slide the Oreo onto the baking sheet with a toothpick. Repeat with remaining Oreos.

Snowmen

  • While the white chocolate is still hot, place 2 candy eyes for eyes and 1 M&M perpendicular to the cookie as the carrot nose. Let harden completely. If the eyes or nose don't attach, add a dab of melted chocolate and press on after it has set.
  • Using the gel writer, pipe 5 dots for the mouth. Repeat with remaining Oreos. Let set completely.

Christmas Trees

  • Let the milk chocolate harden completely before decorating. Place remaining melted chocolate in a zip-top bag. Snip small corners off the bag. Pipe a Christmas tree shape in the center of the Oreo. Cover the tree in sprinkles. Add a dab of melted chocolate to a pearl and place on top of the tree. Repeat with remaining Oreos. Let set completely.
  • In a medium, microwave-safe bowl, add the white chocolate candy melting wafers. Heat 1 minute at 50% power and stir. Continue to heat 30 second intervals at 50% power until melted, stirring well in-between. Make sure there are no lumps in the chocolate and that it is smooth and easy to stir. You may also use a double broiler, if preferred.
  • Dip the bottom half of the Oreo into the white chocolate, letting any excess drip off. Place on parchment paper and let harden.

Reindeer

  • While the milk chocolate is still hot, place 2 candy eyes for eyes and 1 M&M flat as the nose. Add 2 pretzel pieces to the top for antlers. Let set completely. Repeat with remaining Oreos.

Santa Suits

  • Let the red candy coating harden completely before decorating. Using the gel writer, pipe a line across the lower center of the Oreo to resemble a belt.
  • Add a dab of melted chocolate to 1 M&M and 3 pearls. Place the M&M in the center of the belt. Right above it, add the 3 pearls as buttons. Let set. Repeat with remaining ingredients.

Sprinkles
