My Go-To Garlic White Pizza Sauce

Friday pizza night is one of our favorite traditions, and this garlic white pizza sauce is always in the rotation along with pizza sauce or classic marinara.

The kids love spreading it on their own personal pizzas made with my homemade pizza dough, and I love that it comes together in one pan with ingredients I always have on hand.

It’s creamy like an Alfredo sauce but with a stronger basil flavor, and any extra makes the best dip for breadsticks!

Ingredients

  • Salted butter and flour make the roux that thickens the sauce. Use 2 tablespoons of flour for a thinner sauce or 3 for extra thick.
  • Half and half keeps it rich and creamy. Whole milk works too for a lighter sauce.
  • Minced garlic gives it that classic white pizza flavor.
  • Oregano and fresh basil set this apart from a plain white sauce. Fresh basil makes a big difference here.
  • Parmesan melts right in and adds a salty, nutty bite.

How to Make White Pizza Sauce

The process of making a white sauce for pizza.
  1. Make the roux. Melt butter in a sauce pan over medium-low heat. Add in flour and whisk until combined. Slowly whisk in half and half, then add basil, garlic and oregano.
  2. Add parmesan, then simmer. Once combined, stir in parmesan and let sit until melted. S&P to taste. Turn heat to simmer until ready to serve.
  3. Assemble and bake. Roll out the dough, then top with sauce, cheese and your favorite toppings. Bake according to pizza directions.

Best Toppings for White Pizza

There are plenty of toppings that pair perfectly with this white garlic sauce. We love to make a white margherita pizza with the white sauce and simply add mozzarella, tomatoes and fresh basil.

  • Keep it classic with mozzarella, sliced tomatoes and fresh basil, then finish with a drizzle of balsamic glaze.
  • Make it hearty with chicken, mushrooms and spinach, just like my Alfredo pizza.
  • Add a peppery bite with fresh arugula and shaved parmesan after baking.

Tip: Any leftover saue works anywhere you’d use a basic white sauce, stirred into pasta or spooned over roasted vegetables.

Notes

Nutrition information does not include toppings.
Sauce should make enough for 1 large pizza or 2 small pizzas.
Make ahead: Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. It will thicken as it chills, so rewarm gently on the stove and whisk in a splash of half and half to loosen it back up.
