Homemade Cinnamon Sugar

I grew up eating cinnamon sugar on a piece of warm, buttery toast. If you’ve never tried it, the combination is to die for and tastes perfectly sweet and delicious.

I always keep a jar mixed up in my pantry so the perfect ratio is ready whenever I’m making overnight cinnamon rolls, homemade churros or cinnamon tortilla chips. It takes less than 5 minutes to prep and adds a boost of flavor to so many of our favorite treats!

Best Cinnamon Sugar Ratio

The best cinnamon sugar ratio is 1 part ground cinnamon to 4 parts granulated sugar. You get real cinnamon warmth in every sprinkle without it overpowering the sweetness. My go-to batch is 1 cup sugar (200 grams) to 1/4 cup cinnamon (about 30 grams), and it’s easy to scale up or down:

  • 1 cup sugar to 1/4 cup cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup sugar to 2 Tablespoons cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup sugar to 1 Tablespoon cinnamon
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar to 1/2 Tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar to 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon

For a milder blend, use half the cinnamon listed above. So for 1 cup of sugar, use 2 Tablespoons of cinnamon instead of 1/4 cup.

How to Make Cinnamon Sugar

  1. Measure: Add 1 cup granulated sugar and 1/4 cup ground cinnamon to a medium bowl, or choose one of the batch sizes above.
  2. Mix: Stir with a fork or small whisk until evenly combined. You’ll know it’s ready when there are no more streaks of brown or white.
  3. Store: Pour the mix into a glass jar or empty spice shaker and seal with a lid.

Variations

  • Other sugar: Although granulated sugar is more commonly used, you can try it with brown sugar.
  • Type of cinnamon: Cassia cinnamon is what is found most often on your grocery store shelf. Saigon cinnamon, Vietnamese cinnamon or even Ceylon cinnamon can be used.
  • More spices: Add a pinch of nutmeg, cardamom or even allspice to the mix. You could even add a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness.
