There is no shortage of things to love about summer, but the fact that fresh, sweet, juicy berries are back in season is one my favorites! Whether it’s strawberries, blueberries, raspberries or blackberries – I can’t get enough! And believe me, there is no shortage of ways to enjoy them. They taste amazing in cakes, cookies, pancakes, salads, pies, bread, ice cream…you name it.
A yummy treat somehow feels a little less naughty when fresh berries are mixed in. Berry recipes are also a sneaky little way to inject in *some* nutritional value to the kiddos’ food. What’s better than that?!? Also, many of these sensational summer berry recipes are the perfect take-along for all of your get-togethers. I can’t wait to make them all!
Tips for Picking the Best Berries
Color. Look for berries that are bold in color. The more vibrant the color, the more flavor they will have. If the color has started to darken in some spots (especially on strawberries), that could indicate spoilage.
Smell. They should have a fragrant and sweet aroma. If you can’t smell anything, then they probably aren’t ripe quite yet.
Touch. You don’t want berries that are super firm (not ripe) or too mushy (spoiled). They should be somewhere in the middle – soft to touch with a slight give.
Go local. I’ve found some of the most fresh and juicy berries at the local farm in my area. Not only is this a great way to support the farms in your community, but it also makes a great summer activity. Berry picking is a family favorite!
